  • Woven by skillful hands from Hereke with an authentic design, Hereke carpets have gained rightful fame all around the world with their silk and wool series. Carpet weaving in Hereke started after families weaving carpets for the palace in the district of Üsküdar in İstanbul were transferred to Hereke upon the written decree of Sultan Abdülmecid. Then, in 1843, Hereke Woollen Carpet Factory was established and it has found a special place in the world carpet-weaving literature with the silk and woolen carpets it manufactured within one and a half century. One of the most important characteristics of Hereke carpets is that the silk used in them is obtained entirely by hand out of silk cocoons. This ensures that silk is processed in the most suitable and natural way and maintains its shine and durability which are an indication of quality. The carpet needs of Ottoman palaces used to be met through Uflak, Gördes, ‹zmir and Bursa before Hereke Carpet Factory was established. Starting its carpet manufacturing activities upon the efforts of Sultan Abdülhamit II in 1891, Hereke Factory has achieved to pronounce the name of a small town all around the world and convert it into an elite trademark with its elite products. The factory in Hereke participated in many exhibitions in Europe and received prestigious awards. The factory carried out its activities as an affiliate of Sümerbank until 1994 and in 1994, it was turned over to the Great National Assembly of Turkey in order for it to continue its activities as a “Museum-Factory” under the control of the Chairmanship of National Palaces.
