  • Another original value of Karamürsel which is generally famous for its restaurants, tea gardens in the coast line and trekking routes is the tiny baskets made there. Karamürsel baskets are made by weaving fiber strings of chestnut trees as practical and useful, yet simple, tool of carrying and their authenticity comes from the fact that it will not damage its content when carrying it. When Ottoman Sultan Abdülaziz grew highly interested in the basket in which cherries were offered to him and the fact that it contained many cherries and said “This is a tiny basket but even our large tray could not hold its content” and this made the baskets famous. The bottom of Karamürsel baskets is about 15 to 20 centimeters long. Its mouth width is 40 to 45 cm and its length is 60 to 65 cm. As the basket, which resembles a semi-cone is woven from well-cut and dried chestnut tree bars, its capacity is larger than its appearance suggests. The only raw materials of the basket are straight and smooth bars from chestnut trees.
