  • Kocaeli is an interesting city with its traditional houses built in the Turkish residential architecture style. Kapanca Sokak, which is located in İzmit, is an important example of our traditional residential architecture. Many buildings on this street survived up to today preserving their original features of the era in which they were built. A great majority of the old residences in İzmit are houses which were built during the 19th and the 20th century. There are 32 buildings that need to be protected on Kapanca Street and in its vicinity. The basic construction materials used in houses of ‹zmit were stone blocks, adobe, bricks and wood. Fodder-added mud cement and iron bars were also used as additional materials. Garden arrangement, which is an indispensible feature of traditional Turkish houses, can be observed in traditional ‹zmit houses. Houses generally had two floors. Ground floors were organized in accordance with the requirements for winter. While masonry was widely employed for ground floors, adobe and wood were preferred in other floors. Rooms were designed as living units that met basic needs of humans living in them.
