  • Eskihisar Castle is located within 1 kilometers’ distance to the center of the district of Darıca in the southwest of Gebze and it is connected to the İstanbul-Ankara highway as well as Gebze station. It used to be an important passage controlling the pass to the south of İzmit Bay in the past. Today, it is the most important passing zone of the Bay. The castle was built by the sea on a hill with sharp slopes and it can be easily seen during a trip on the Bursa-İstanbul ferry boat line. It is known that the castle was built for purposes of protection during the Byzantine era. The entrance hall of the castle is sometimes used for activities like concerts. The castle, which is thought have been ordered to be built as are rectangular structure with 4 doors and 10 bastions by the Byzantine Emperor Manuel Comnenus I, has a main entrance located on the northern façade between two round bastions. A theater with a capacity of 1025 spectators and a Byzantine cistern with 8 pillars and 15 domes were uncovered just under the building.
