  • Yahya Kaptan was born in the town of Köprülü in Macedonia in 1891. He was a national hero who organized the Kuva-i Milliye (National Resistance) movement in Kocaeli during the War of Independence. After the Balkan War, he went to İstanbul and joined Teşkilat-ı Mahsusa (a secret organization of the time). Then he actively participated in transboundary operations agains Servians and the Iraqi front of Halil Pasha. He struggled against the Consolidation Supporters at the end of World War I and he took control of Kocaeli Peninsula from which human and material transportation for the consolidation supporters took place. The communication between Anatolia and İstanbul was carried out in here and it played a great role in overthrowing the enemy out of the country. Yahya Kaptan was martyrized on January 8th, 1920 in Tavşancıl where he lived just at the age of 29. The Mausoleum the construction of which was ordered by Mustafa Kemal who was deeply influenced by his martyrization was the built in Tavşancıl.
